- On the "Low" setting, with my iPhone 4 inches away from the side of the dryer: 88.5 dB.
- On the "High" setting, with my iPhone 4 inches away from the side of the dryer: 90.4 dB.
- On the "High" setting, with my iPhone 4 inches away from the back of the dryer: 91.8 dB.
So, starting tomorrow, two things: (1) I will always wear hearing protection when using this hair dryer and (2) I will start looking for the quietest replacement hair dryer out there. I'll be a bit scientific about it: I'll purchase a number of different models, including those more expensive models that claim to be quiet; I'll rig up a testing apparatus; and I'll post the results here. I bet there are a lot of you out there who, like me, are looking for a quiet hair dryer!
PS I decided I should also measure how loud my bathroom is when the hair dryer is off. With the door closed and nothing running, my bathroom is a very relaxing 37.2 dB. But then came a shocker -- when I turned on the fan, the decibel level jumped to 57.3!
